Nora Aunor Honored as National Artist: How Her Family Reacted
The long-awaited recognition for Philippine cinema’s beloved “Superstar” has finally come! Nora Aunor has been officially named a National Artist for Film, a prestigious honor that cements her legacy as one of the most influential figures in Philippine entertainment. However, what made the moment even more special was the heartfelt reactions of her ex-husband Christopher de Leon and their children Ian de Leon, Matet de Leon, Kenneth, and Kiko.
A Long Overdue Honor
For years, fans and industry insiders have been campaigning for Nora Aunor to receive the National Artist Award, and in 2022, their wishes were granted. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) officially recommended her name, and Malacañang Palace recognized her immense contribution to Philippine cinema.
Unfortunately, due to health concerns, Nora was unable to personally receive the Grand Collar, the insignia of the award, during the conferment ceremony at Malacañang. Instead, her children proudly accepted the honor on her behalf, marking an emotional and historic moment for the Aunor-De Leon family.

At a press conference for his upcoming series “Lolong”, Ian de Leon expressed how much the recognition meant to their family.

“We have been waiting for this for years. It was long overdue for our mom. When the official announcement was made, we were ecstatic. Proud na proud kami bilang mga anak for our mom,” Ian shared.
He also thanked the fans who stood by Nora throughout her decades-long career, ensuring that her talent and legacy were never forgotten.
Matet’s Heartfelt Message
Meanwhile, Matet de Leon took to Instagram to share her overwhelming joy and admiration for her mother, calling her “Our Queen”.
“Muli, maraming maraming salamat po. Congratulations to our mommy … Our Queen. Our Superstar. Our National Artist,” she wrote, expressing deep gratitude to everyone who supported her mother’s journey.
Christopher de Leon’s Recognition of Nora’s Achievements
Even Christopher de Leon, Nora’s former husband and longtime co-star, was vocal about his admiration. As a veteran actor himself, Christopher acknowledged that Nora is only the second actor in Philippine history to receive the National Artist title for Film, following the legendary Fernando Poe Jr.
“She has done a lot of meaningful movies, like ‘Himala’ and ‘The Flor Contemplacion Story.’ She was considered the best actor in Asia. Those achievements truly earned her this award,” Christopher said.
Having starred in numerous films together, including “Banaue: Stairway to the Sky,” “Ikaw ay Akin,” and “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos,” Christopher shared how Nora’s unparalleled dedication to her craft set her apart in the industry.

Aside from her family, fellow actors and filmmakers also celebrated Nora’s recognition. Veteran actor Bembol Roco, who worked with Nora on classics like “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos,” “Merika,” and “Thy Womb,” expressed his happiness over the well-deserved award.
“It’s about time. She has given her share of great performances. She deserves to be a National Artist,” Bembol stated.
