Pinoy fans have another historical film to watch out for.  

On Thursday, February 16, Jesuit Communications (JesCom) revealed the official cast for the historical film, GomBurZa, a day before the 151st death anniversary of the three martyr priests. 

The movie will tackle the story of three martyr Catholic priests Mariano Gomez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora—collectively known as GomBurZa—who were executed in 1872 on subversion charges.  

Veteran and award-winning actor Dante Rivero will play Padre Mariano Gomez, theater artist Cedrick Juan will portray Padre José Burgos, and Kapamilya actor-TV host Enchong Dee will portray Padre Jacinto Zamora.  

The star-studded cast will have a special appearance of Piolo Pascual who will play Padre Pédro Pelaéz, the Filipino clergy leader who was a mentor of Padre José Burgos. 

Elated, Dante shared how he’s been preparing for his role as Padre Gomez, “Pinag-aaralan ko na sa bahay. I want to engage the audience. I want to make it memorable for them. This is going to be epic!” 

Cedrick, for his part, shared that accepting the role will be his “biggest break” in his 10-year career. He said, “I said ‘yes’ right away when I got the offer, it was no brainer!” Though overwhelmed on being a part of the lead cast, he makes sure to fully prepare for his role as Padre Burgos, “Kailangan todohan ng effort, time and puso,” he stressed.  

Cedrick has been part of independent features such as Kalel, 15, Big Night!, and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral. 

Known for his hosting and portrayals mostly in light dramas, fans can anticipate Enchong transforming into a sterner role. Sharing his learnings in his role as Padre Zamora, he shared, “Yes, he is a hero but you can’t take away the human part of him: the temptation, the weaknesses but those are the things that will bring him closer to the audience.” 

The 34-year-old actor also revealed he got nervous a week before filming, “There’s a certain level of pressure and inspiration. But I have faith in the people who are behind the camera,” he said, adding, “So it’s only right and just for me to give the same level of professionalism towards my character.” 

The upcoming historical film is directed by Pepe Diokno and the screenplay is written by Rody Rivera. It will be produced by JesCom, the media arm of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines.  

Further details about its exact release date, trailers, and other casts have yet to be announced.
