That’s exactly what Kathryn Bernardo did to ring in the New Year. On her mom Min Bernardo‘s Instagram, we saw how the festivities played out in the Bernardo household. At the stroke of midnight, we spotted Kath underneath a table furiously chomping on 12 pieces of grapes. The tradition says that you have to eat all 12 of them (while thinking of your 12 wishes) during the first 12 seconds of the New Year, which is why we saw Kath struggling a bit, LOL! We don’t blame her, because those grapes looked big and juicy AF.

After eating all the grapes, we saw Kath jumping up and down. According to this New Year’s superstition, jumping as much as you can once the clock hits 12 can help you grow taller. Kath stands at nearly 5’2, so as fellow short girlies, we totally understand her joining in!

So…why do people eat 12 grapes under a table on New Year’s Eve?

According to an article by Cosmopolitan Australia, this tradition has Spanish origins. Called las doce uvas de la suerte or “the twelve grapes of luck,” the 12 pieces of grapes represent all the months in a year. Eating those pieces at midnight is said to bring good luck for all those months.

The tradition also states that you’re supposed to eat all 12 pieces during the first 12 seconds of the New Year. Aside from that, you’re also supposed to be thinking of 12 wishes during those 12 seconds as you eat them. That’s 12 grapes in 12 seconds with 12 wishes at 12AM! It may sound kinda hard—we did see Kath struggling a bit—but if it means having more luck in the coming months, then why not?
