James Gunn shared a surprising news with fans about his highly anticipated film Superman: Legacy on leap year, February 29, 2024.

Taking to his Instagram account on Thursday, the Co-CEO of the DC Studio shared an exciting and surprising update about the new name of Superman: Legacy, as he finished working on the final draft of film’s script.

Gunn posted a picture of Superman’s signature logo covered with snow, alongside a note, in which he expressed his joy over kicking off the principal photography on the upcoming action film.

“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” wrote the Guardian of the Galaxy director.

He further revealed, “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.”

Meanwhile, James Gunn also shared his post in the story with a caption that read, “How wild is this? Today was our first day of principal photography on #Superman – Feb 29 – which happens to be Clark Kent’s birthday. Unplanned. (Photo from my iPhone on location today).”

Shortly after James Gunn shared this new update, especially regarding the new name of the film, fans could not resist expressing their reaction over this change.

One fan wrote, “I liked Legacy, but I’m totally alright with simply “Superman!”

While another gushed, “so cool, you are absolutely going to create a masterpiece and i can’t wait to watch it James.”

“I’m liking SUPERMAN much better, it’s a statement of iconic prowess, which adding legacy didn’t,” noted a third.

Superman will be released on July 11, 2025, which marks the first solo Superman project after Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, with Henry Cavill.
