Khalil Ramos on seeing Gabbi Garcia for first time: ‘She illuminated the place’
It’s not everyday we get enchanted with a beautiful love story that feels like it came straight out of a fairy tale book, which is exactly what Khalil Ramos and Gabbi Garcia treated us to in the first episode of their podcast.
On “Figure It Out,” the Kapuso couple talked about their first encounter and how their relationship flourished thereafter.
As most fans will already know by now, Gabbi and Khalil first met at Julia Barretto’s debut back in 2015. Gabbi and Julia were classmates, while Khalil had become good friends with the debutante after they’d met at work.
According to Khalil, he had been single for almost two years. He’d joked about how he was eight-wheeling his friends since he was at a table filled with couples.
The moment Gabbi entered the ballroom, Khalil remembered asking his friends, “Sino ‘yun?”
“That’s exactly what I said…I was taken aback because you were glammed up. She really illuminated the place for me,” Khalil said in Filipino.
“And then I was coming from a place where my friends were teasing me that I was single and suddenly there’s this girl walking in with her hair dressed in a low ponytail.”
Kathryn Bernardo was also at the debut and when Khalil asked her who Gabbi was, she immediately introduced the two.
“[Kathryn] didn’t answer who you were. She knew right away the intention of my question. So Kath, she winged me, she introduced me to you and you kinda disappeared for a while,” Khalil said.
Soon, he spotted Gabbi alone in the party while she looked for her classmates.
“So I was like, ‘Where are my friends?’ And then here goes Khalil walking towards me,” Gabbi said.
She shared that after making small talk, Khalil helped her look for her friends and he then spent the rest of the night with her and her friends throughout the night.
“When I had my friends with me, you were just really quiet. You were just there accompanying us and after that, after a few hours, he was still there. My ride came already.”
Khalil escorted her to the elevator — Gabbi didn’t want him to bring her down to the lobby — and to Gabbi’s surprise, Khalil didn’t ask for her number.
“Sinamahan ako buong gabi, ininterview ako buong gabi, hinatid ako sa elevator, tapos hindi kinuha number ko (He kept me company the whole night, interviewed me the whole evening, brought me to the elevator, and didn’t even ask for my number)!” Gabbi said.
Khalil explained that in that moment, he froze. “Natorpe ako (I was shy),” he said. “When the moment comes like this is our chance, I really freeze.”
Fortunately, Gabbi was following Khalil on Twitter, and Khalil decided to follow her back and ask for her number there, blaming the alcohol as an excuse for not getting it that night.
Afterwards, the two would find themselves texting everyday and sharing deep and meaningful conversations about their lives, from their philosophies to their outlooks in life.
However, both shared that they had a lot of things going on in their lives and their conversations slowly faded.
It was in 2017 when they connected again. Khalil was starring in a film and Gabbi was hooked and really wanted to watch it after viewing the trailer. But tickets were sold out and she didn’t know where to find available ones. Her friend suggested she message Khalil since they knew each other, but at that point, Gabbi felt shy to reach out after two years of silence.
“We haven’t talked in a while and for one thing, we had this — not awkwardness. We talked in a much deeper way. I kinda was shy to text you but I did anyway,” Gabbi said in Filipino. “And you replied right away ‘Oh yeah, I have tickets.’ And then, ‘How are you na? It’s been so long,’”
That was on February 22, 20217 and “The rest is history,” Gabbi said.
“And we never stopped texting, talking, interacting from that day on ‘til present.”
Khalil and Gabbi consider the fateful February day as their anniversary. This year, they celebrated their fourth year together.
Gabbi shared, “I feel like it was long overdue. What’s nice about it is, God gave us a glimpse of how we are together in 2015. Maybe it wasn’t the right timing and we had so much to figure out individually, we had so much to do…So it was just right timing in 2017 and after that it flourished.”
Khalil also said, “We met at the right time where we were able to balance things and to share our personal life with someone so we could complement each other without compromising anything.”
Gabbi added, “So far best four years ever. It’s really gonna work if it’s with the right person.”
