“I grew up in a Catholic society, Catholic school,” lahad ni Piolo sa media launch ng Mallari noong Hunyo 19, 2023, Lunes, sa Novotel Hotel, Quezon City.

“Siyempre, sila yung head namin sa school, e, di ba? The Rector, I believe, is what we would call them.

“So, respeto, and you listen to them. We would do Masses once a week sa school, and on Sundays sa church.

“So, yeah, he’s the representative of the church.”

Nangarap ba siyang maging pari?

“Opo. I wanted to be a priest. I was I think 18. I attended the seminar Parish Renewal Experience, PREx, back in the day,” pag-amin ni Piolo.

“And I remember having this conversation with a priest. And I told him, ‘Gusto ko sanang magpari na lang para mas madali yung buhay.’

“And then he said, ‘You have to be a college graduate, or you have to go back to college to study priesthood.’

“And then when I became a Christian, I told my pastor the same thing, ‘Puwede bang mag-pastor na lang ako para mas madali rin ang buhay?’

“Sabi niya, ‘No, we need people like you in the business. Because we need you in the market place.’

“So I had two attempts to enter priesthood or the pastor community but it never happened that’s why I’m an artista.”

Ang Mallari ay ididirek ni Derick Cabrido, para sa Mentorque Productions. Hopefully ay makapasok ito sa Metro Manila Film Festival 2023 sa Disyembre.

Naniniwala ba si Piolo sa multo?

“Hindi pa ako nakakakita ng multo, e. But I’m a very religious person myself,” sabi ni Piolo.

“But I love watching horror films, which is supernatural. And based on the research of course, these are all just handed down through different generations.

“But it’s the magic of cinema, and I can’t way to see it happen, you know, when we shoot.

“But my personal view on it, I guess, unless makakita ako, I won’t.”

Maraming horror films na sinisimulan o tinatapos ngayon. Kabilang diyan ang horror fillm ng ating Superstar National Artist Nora Aunor, naringgan din namin ang kampo ni Nadine Lustre, pati ang hukbo ni Kim Chiu na nag-aabang ng mga pelikulang kakatakutan.

Ang Regal, ibabalik ang Shake, Rattle & Roll trilogy.

Sana, matapos ang lahat ito nang maayos at mapanood ng marami nating mga kababayan na sana’y bumalik na ulit at gagastos para rin para sa pelikulang Pilipino!

“Huwag akong takutin ni Mallari! Sana, huwag naman akong ma-possess! Ha! Ha! Ha! But I won’t go that far.

“I mean, you know, I just have respect for the cinema, and a high respect for my craft. So I’m just gonna delve into it, and dig deep, and see you know where it can take us.”

May ritual ba siya bago simulan ang horror movie na Mallari?

“Wala naman, wala naman, ipagdadasal ko na lang na walang supernatural na mangyayari,” tugon ng premyadong aktor.

“Huwag naman. Ha! Ha! Ha! Kailangan kong mag-move on after. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Yun lang naman siguro!”

Madali na lang ba sa kanya ang mag-de-role, iyong bumitaw o kumawala sa karakter na ginampanan niya?

“Depende po sa karakter. Wala akong choice but to move on because yung ginawa kong pelikula before na Lagarista, ginagawa ko pa rin ngayon,” saad ni Piolo.

“Lumalagari pa rin ako nang walang tigil. So, I have to shake it off everytime I finish a project. I have to jump into another one. So I have no choice but to move on.

“And in terms of shaking off a character — it never leaves you — but you know, that’s the fun part of being an artist.

“That’s the fun part of portraying a character, na malalaro mo, na hindi ikaw. But of course there are glimpses and you know, mga nuances na puwede mong i-integrate sa character.

“But for this one, I’m just really excited but nervous at the same time, like when I took on the role of Crisostomo Ibarra for the musical, you know.

“With my eyes closed, I said yes. And to do the project, it’s a privilege, but more than that, yung responsibilidad mo to take on a character, and be that character.

“Kailangan iwan mo na sa set pagkatapos. Kasi may iba pang trabaho after. So trabaho lang.

“But portraying a character is always what excites me, you know. Being different.”
