Piolo Pascual on his teleserye comeback: ‘I’m coming home to my forte’
After being hailed as the 72nd FAMAS Best Actor, Piolo Pascual is set to make his television series comeback with Pamilya Sagrado, premiering on June 17.
In a blog conference for the highly-anticipated teleserye, Piolo shared his happiness returning to doing series after his previous big screen and theater projects.
“I’m coming home to my forte… I’m just really happy to be back here doing the thing that I love the most, which is acting,” he said.
“It felt so good being part of the team na alam mong everyone just brought their A-game and from the story na from the time it all started with Tita Cory (Vidanes) wanting to do this kind of project, with Tito Deo (Endrinal) pitched it in to me after I did the last day of Ibarra last year, and then I jumped in Sagrado right away.” he continued.
Piolo also expressed his gratitude for being part of an incredible line-up of veteran and rising actors who all joined together to bring to life an exciting project.
“Having a great cast, a great production team, great directors, sabi ko, ‘Wow! Iba talaga gumawa ang ABS-CBN.’ Ang sarap ng pakiramdam na it’s not about you but the whole concept of coming up with something original, something na masasabi mo na came out of nothing, came out of nowhere, but here we are working hand in hand to come out with hopefully something great that people would enjoy watching,” he added.
During the blogcon, the press was able to watch the first two episodes of the show where Piolo’s character, Rafael Sagrado, was seen as a corrupt politician who wants to maintain the clean reputation of their family despite the dirty work they do.
With a chance to portray a dark and complex character, Piolo revealed that it was one of the reasons he accepted to take on the role.
“Sabi ko ang sarap paglaruan kasi napakasama niya and maraming paghuhugutan doon sa conflict na pagdadaanan ng character niya with (other characters)… Napaka-complex niya. Ito yung tipo ng istorya na ang sarap bigyan ng buhay kasi hindi ka nakakahon,” he remarked.
Piolo went on: “Ikaw mismo yung ma-amaze sa pagexpose ng mga conflict and it’s just nice to be in that ride, to go along with the ride, be a collaborator, be a team player. Sabi ko ito na iyon kung gagawa ka ng soap opera.”
Piolo also shared that before saying yes to the project, he made sure that his character would not just be a pure bad and corrupt one.
“There has to be redemption for the character. He can’t be bad all the way. That’s why I’m excited for my character because he starts out bad, but through the journey of his story, he’s gonna turn into good. It has to have redemption. If there’s no hope, let’s not do it. That’s my mantra in life. If I’m not going to learn anything from the story which would make me a better person, I would not do it… It has to end on a good note,” he shared.
Piolo’s last television series was the Philippine adaptation of the South Korean mystery-crime drama series, Flower of Evil, in 2022. The series was supposedly his last television project, as he recalled.
Now that he is back on the small screen after two years, Piolo shared that he somewhat found it challenging shifting from his previous projects to TV shows.
“Sobra yung challenge kasi siyempre iba yung acting sa TV. I would tell my director, I would tell my co-actors… ito kasi as you go along it’s slow burn. Ikaw mismo gagawa ng graph ng character mo so TV discipline is different. You tend to have kind of to modify it in such a way na magcompliment sa succeeding scenes na,” he told the press.
