John Rendez Breaks His Silence: “Nora Aunor Needed Me the Most — I Was the Only One Who Never Gave Up on Her”
For more than three decades, John Rendez has quietly stood by the side of Philippine National Artist and legendary actress-singer Nora Aunor. Through the highs and lows, controversies, and health scares, John never left — not even when others walked away. But now, in a rare and emotional tell-all, John is finally speaking up about his enduring friendship with the Superstar and why he believes he was the one person she truly needed when the world turned its back on her.
“I never thought about myself,” John shared in a soft, steady voice. “All I ever wanted was for her to feel she’s not alone. I wanted her to see that someone would stay by her side — not for money, not for fame, but because I love her. I love Ate Guy more than I love most people. And real friendship is not just words. You show it in actions.”
John met Nora when he was just 18 years old. Now 52, he looks back at the decades they spent together — not just as artist and manager, but as soul-bound companions. Nora managed his career for 34 years. She gave him a home, a stage, and a sense of belonging. But behind the scenes, it wasn’t always easy.
“There was a time when people were telling her to let me go. They didn’t understand why I was still around. Some thought I was using her. But what they didn’t see was how much she depended on me emotionally, especially when she was sick in the U.S. I was the one who knew her needs — not just her schedule, but her heart,” John revealed.
He recalled the tense years when Nora was battling health issues in America. While her name still rang with prestige in the Philippines, abroad, she was isolated, frail, and homesick. And it was during this time, according to John, that many of her own children became distant.
“I’m not here to start drama,” John clarified. “But there were times she cried to me. She missed her kids. She wanted to feel loved by them. But sometimes, people get too busy, or they think she’ll always be around. They don’t realize what a privilege it is just to hear her voice every day.”
On Nora’s 70th birthday in 2023, John helped organize the celebration but chose to step away from the spotlight. He didn’t give a speech. He didn’t pose for photos.
“I’m shy,” he admitted. “But also, it was her moment. I didn’t want to interfere. That night was for her family. I know my place.”
Yet, despite his efforts to stay in the background, John remains a polarizing figure among Nora’s fans and inner circle. Some see him as a loyal companion. Others, as an outsider who stayed too long.
“To those people,” John said bluntly, “do you think you can replace me? You think you can handle everything I’ve handled for 30+ years? Good luck. A lot of them tried. They all gave up. Me? I stayed. Through the pain, the chaos, the silence — I stayed.”
Even Nora herself has admitted her shortcomings as a manager. In a moment of rare vulnerability, she once said, “John came to us when he was just 18. He’s 52 now. I feel guilty sometimes. I wasn’t able to build his career the way I should have. He gave me everything, but I gave him so little in return.”
But John shrugs off the regret. For him, it was never about becoming a star.
“I’ve made mistakes, sure,” he said. “But I don’t regret the years I spent by her side. I may have lost opportunities, but I gained a purpose. If I had taken a different path, I might not have been here — with the person who needed me the most.”
As the years go by and Nora Aunor’s legacy becomes even more legendary, one man’s name continues to be quietly etched beside hers — not because of scandal, or headlines, or contracts, but because of something deeper: unwavering friendship.
“I’m just a good man,” John concluded, “trying every day not to turn into a bad man. And loving Ate Guy? That’s the best part of who I am.”
