Human Rights Advocates Express Concern Over ICC’s Postponement of Charges Against Duterte
On Tuesday, September 9, human rights advocates, led by Karapatan, gathered at the Ambai Modern Tambayan restaurant in Quezon City to hold a press conference following the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to postpone the confirmation of charges against former president Rodrigo Duterte.
Emily Soriano, a relative of one of the victims of Duterte’s controversial war on drugs, voiced her concerns about the postponement, suggesting that it could provide an opportunity for the Duterte family to harass, intimidate, or even endanger prosecution witnesses. Soriano’s statement highlighted the ongoing fear and uncertainty surrounding the case, as many witnesses have already been subjected to threats in the past.
The delay in the ICC proceedings has drawn attention from both local and international human rights organizations, who fear that it could further prolong the quest for justice for the victims of the war on drugs, which claimed thousands of lives during Duterte’s presidency.
The decision to delay the charges comes amidst growing pressure for the international community to hold the Duterte administration accountable for its actions. Despite the postponement, human rights groups remain resolute in their demand for justice and the protection of those who have been affected by the brutal campaign.
As the situation develops, many are closely monitoring how the ICC’s actions will impact the ongoing fight for justice in the Philippines.
