After years of speculation, actress Liza Soberano has officially confirmed her breakup with longtime partner Enrique Gil.
In a recent episode of Can I Come In? Featuring Liza on YouTube, the actress revealed that they had ended their relationship nearly three years ago.
“I’ve been honestly itching to tell people this because I haven’t been very truthful. Quen hasn’t been very truthful. Quen and I broke up,” Liza admitted. “We’ve been broken up for almost three years now.”
According to Liza, Enrique initially requested that they keep their separation private.
“The reason, originally why we haven’t said anything about it is because Enrique or Quen asked me not to say anything about it first and I think it, I don’t want to speak for him but I think it was coming from a place of not wanting it to be real,” Liza expressed.
She added, “I agreed to do that because I also didn’t want it to be real. This is coming from the people pleaser side of me because I was so afraid that when people found out that we weren’t together anymore, my career would go bad or people wouldn’t love me anymore.”
“Me and Quen broke up almost three years ago.”
The actress shared that a year before the breakup, she had already felt unhappy in the relationship but avoided confronting the issues.
“I think a year before I actually broke up with him, there were already signs that showing me that I was unhappy but because I had built up this kind of toxic habit of pushing away anything that bothered me because I was afraid of confrontation,” Liza stated.
“I decided to just swallow it or sweep everything under the rug. I accepted that there were certain things about him that I wasn’t okay with and that it’s just always going to be like that,” she continued.
She also admitted that after almost a decade of being together, she thought that they would end up getting married soon.
“I was like mentally telling myself this thing because we were already at the point, almost 8 years together and I was genuinely expecting us to get married, like, soon but that didn’t happen,” she said. “When I broke up with him, I would say that it was such a beautiful breakup because it was still full of love.”
Despite ending the relationship, Liza said she still holds Enrique in high regard.
“It was so hard for me to actually break up with him because I love him. I still love him as a person,” she said. “When I look back at our time together, I just see good moments all the time. I think of him as like a childhood best friend. It’s just so beautiful.”
She also admitted feeling guilt over the split, knowing that many fans hoped they would stay together.
“I carry a lot of guilt for not being the one that held on because that was what my fans wanted me to do. But also, I just needed to find myself and grow too,” she explained.
Liza also emphasized, “He didn’t do anything bad. Nothing bad happened. Our breakup was really good. It was just, we weren’t a match anymore.”
Liza also said that while she and Enrique still communicate, the breakup continues to weigh on her.
“I still very bad about it like whenever I talk to him, we still talk from time to time. Whenever I just check in our group of friends, I can’t help but feel like that feel I was so selfish and I was being selfish and I feel guilty about that. I feel like I was born to be the understanding person and I don’t know why I couldn’t do it at that moment,” she revealed.
She added that despite the guilt, she knew ending the relationship was necessary.
“But at the same time, I knew that deep down in my core that something was wrong and I would be doing a disservice not only to me but to him if I didn’t say anything or do anything about it,” she added.
Liza and Enrique, also known as LizQuen, began their relationship in 2014 and went public in 2019. The two starred together in several hit television and film projects, including Alone Together, Forevermore, Bagani, My Ex and Whys, Dolce Amore, Just The Way You Are, Everyday I Love You, and Make It With You.
Rumors of their breakup began circulating in 2022 after fans noticed the couple’s reduced public appearances and absence from each other’s social media posts. While reports at the time claimed they had already parted ways, both Liza and Enrique either remained silent or denied the speculation.
