In her 2023 “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” interview that was only released recently, Liza Soberano said her relationship with James Reid is purely “platonic” and that the latter had nothing to do with the actress’ breakup with Enrique Gil.

Reid served as Soberano’s talent manager when she signed under his talent label Careless in 2022. Reid confirmed in 2024 that the actress had left the agency.

Soberano, in the 2023 interview, made the clarification after show host Boy Abunda brought up Reid’s name along with the speculations about their closeness at the time.

“James Reid has nothing to do with this (breakup)? I mean hindi ka nililigawan, you don’t have a relationship together—wala ito, as people may speculate and suggest?” Abunda asked.

(James Reid has nothing to do with the breakup? I mean he did not court you; you two don’t have a relationship as what people may speculate and suggest?)

“Oh no. It’s purely platonic. He’s my manager,” the actress said.

“There’s nothing. There is no third party. I know people always like to make it about that, but no. We just—we grew apart,” she continued, referring to Gil.

Meanwhile, Reid spoke about Soberano in a July interview with Karen Davila, after the broadcaster asked if the actress had reached out to him to apologize after leaving his talent label.

“No, I don’t need an apology or explanation at all. She really wanted to focus on her career in the United States so we parted ways,” he said.

“I have no ill feelings or ill will towards her. I’m very happy for her,” he added. “I’m proud of everything she’s achieved in the United States.”
