April is shaping up to be an unforgettable month for Geneva Cruz, as she is set to celebrate her 35th showbiz anniversary and 49th birthday to share her music with a younger audience.
Cruz, who is set to hold her “Gen Evolution” show on April 4 and 5 in San Juan, is hopeful to use the show—as a celebration of her 35th year in the entertainment industry—as an opportunity to share her music, songwriting, and prose.
“It’s a good story to share. By sharing my music, and the music from my time, I want my younger audience, the millennials, to appreciate the music from a creative level the songwriting, the prose, which unfortunately we don’t see or hear much of these days,” she said in a press statement, noting that the show has always been part of her bucket list.
“Since this happens shortly after my birthday, I want it to be a big party where I can celebrate with friends and fans alike,” Cruz further added.
The singer-actress also looked back at her songwriting which she considered as an outlet of hers, as well as the melodies she kept in her “unused files.” One of her recent compositions was “When Christmas Comes” which was released in November 2024.
“I composed some songs that have been part of my past albums, starting from my first solo album when I was 15. Some of the songs I did include ‘Love Can Wait,’ ‘To Manila,’ ‘Love Is Here,’ ‘Set You Free,’ and ‘Peace.’ Writing has always been an outlet of mine. I’ve written more and composed the melodies on my unused files,” she said.
Speaking of the Jeffrey Hidalgo-helmed show, her longtime manager Arnold Vegafria praised Cruz for using her “true calling” as a platform to be a “shining” example to the younger generation.
“Even as a young girl, she was always fierce. She was a fighter. She knew what she wanted, and she would fight for something that she truly believed in,” he said. “And it’s amazing how even up to now, such a mindset has led her to [accomplish] so many things—not just in music, but in finding her true calling and being a light that shines bright for others.”
After being discovered by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab, Cruz started her entertainment career in 1989 as one of the members of the singing group Smokey Mountain. Also part of the original lineup are Hidalgo, James Coronel, and Tony Lambino.
The group is best known for their hit songs “Da Coconut Nut,” “Can This Be Love,” and “Kailan,” to name a few.
Apart from her Smokey Mountain days, Cruz appeared in TV and films including “Anak ng Pasig,” “Little Princess,” and “Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin.” She is set to appear in the upcoming musical film “Nasaan Si Hesus.”
