As the poignant love story of DJ Koo (Koo Jun Yup) and the late Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu (Xu Xiyuan) spreads widely, their first meeting nearly 20 years ago has once again become the center of attention.

Following news of Barbie Hsu’s passing away, a video capturing their first encounter—uploaded on the YouTube channel of the Taiwanese variety show 100Entertainment—gained significant attention from international and South Korean netizens on February 11.

Their First Meeting

Many expressed their sorrow, leaving comments such as: “I hope they can be together for a long time in their next life” and “Sending comfort and peace to the family.”

In the video, DJ Koo and Barbie Hsu exchanged affectionate glances, seemingly lost in their own world. Some sources believe their love began at that very moment. Greeting DJ Koo in Korean, Barbie Hsu said, “Hello. You are so handsome,” to which Koo simply replied, “Xièxiè” (thank you) in Chinese.

When Barbie Hsu’s younger sister, host Dee Hsu, asked about his ideal type, DJ Koo responded, “I want to be with someone I have a connection with, someone refined.”

Meanwhile, Taiwanese netizens fondly referred to DJ Koo as the “nation’s brother-in-law.” They also dismissed baseless rumors from the media, asserting, “Taiwanese people do not care about such meaningless gossip.”

The cinematic love story of DJ Koo and Barbie Hsu—from their emotional reunion to their tragic separation—continues to touch many hearts.

The couple originally dated for about a year in 1998 but broke up due to personal reasons. However, after learning about Barbie Hsu’s divorce, DJ Koo took the initiative to reconnect, rekindling their past romance.

Despite being a major star in Taiwan, Barbie Hsu had kept the same phone number for 20 years, leading many to believe it was destiny.

A Bold Decision Amid the Pandemic

When the COVID-19 pandemic prevented them from meeting in person, the couple made a bold yet heartfelt decision: to get married.

In an emotional video aired on MBC’s Radio Star in August 2023, the couple embraced tightly and wept.

Reflecting on that moment, DJ Koo shared, “If I had to choose the most memorable moment of my life, it would be that one.”

A Tragic Farewell

However, tragedy struck just before their third wedding anniversary. During a family trip to Japan, Barbie Hsu contracted the flu, which later developed into pneumonia, leading to her passing.

According to some sources, Barbie Hsu’s ashes will be interred in an ecological memorial park in Taiwan.

On February 4, Kang Won Rae—a longtime friend and fellow member of the group Clon—offered words of encouragement: “Take care and stay strong.”

In response, DJ Koo replied, “I will try to endure. If I call, I fear I will break down in tears, so I can only text.”

By February 6, DJ Koo expressed his grief for the first time on social media: “I am experiencing indescribable pain and loss—an unbearable agony.”

Then, on February 8—their wedding anniversary—he tagged Barbie Hsu’s account and left a final message: “I will love you forever.”
