Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu dies from influenza-related pneumonia at age 48 during trip to Japan

The Asian entertainment industry is reeling from the shocking news of actress Barbie Hsu’s sudden passing in Japan due to complications from seasonal influenza and severe pneumonia. On the evening of February 3, new details surrounding the actress’s unexpected death continued to stir widespread discussion in China. As per Next Apple’s exclusive report, Barbie Hsu was in completely good health when she traveled to Japan with her family. However, after spending 1~2 days there, she began experiencing severe coughing fits, which later progressed into pneumonia.

When her condition deteriorated significantly, she was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the dire situation, Barbie Hsu was not placed on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), a life-support technique that can temporarily take over heart and lung functions for critically ill patients suffering from severe circulatory or respiratory failure. According to Next Apple, her official medical records listed the final cause of death as sepsis.

Dr. Du Chengzhe, a Taiwanese thoracic surgery specialist, explained, “Pneumonia can lead to sepsis. If blood oxygen levels or blood pressure become insufficient, pneumonia can rapidly deteriorate, increasing the risk of septic shock.”

Dr. Du further emphasized, “It is not surprising at all that pneumonia led to sepsis.”

According to family members, Barbie Hsu’s body will be cremated in Japan, and her ashes will be brought back to her hometown in Taiwan. The family is still in discussions regarding the timing of the funeral and memorial services.

On the afternoon of February 3, Barbie Hsu’s mother stated that the family is currently handling various legal and procedural matters in Japan, which is why they have yet to transport her ashes back to Taiwan. She also expressed a heartfelt request, hoping that the media and fans would not chase after or film when her remains arrive at the Taiwanese airport, as this was both Barbie’s personal wish and the family’s request.

Meanwhile, the tour guide alleged that if Barbie Hsu’s family had taken her to a large hospital in Tokyo from the beginning—instead of spending time going to a smaller hospital in Hakone that failed to diagnose her condition—perhaps the late actress could have survived.
