According to Taiwanese (China) media, Barbie Hsu and DJ Koo did not sign a prenuptial agreement, which means the South Korean music producer is entitled to inherit one-third of his wife’s assets.

If he refuses, this portion cannot be directly transferred to the actress’s mother but will instead be equally divided among her children.

Disputes Over the Prenuptial Agreement

Barbie Hsu passed away at the age of 48, reportedly leaving behind a massive fortune. The exact amount remains unknown, but it certainly includes two real estate properties: a villa at the National Museum of Fine Arts and a penthouse in Xinyi District, Taipei City, Taiwan (China), with a total value exceeding 600 million NTD (over 18.2 million USD).

Once the funeral arrangements for the actress, born in 1976, were completed, the most pressing issue became the division of her inheritance.

Earlier, many lawyers in Taiwan (China) pointed out that under the current Civil Code, the primary heirs include her husband, DJ Koo (Koo Jun Yeop), and Barbie Hsu’s two children.

As a legal heir, whether or not the “Meteor Garden” star left a will, DJ Koo is still entitled to a portion of her estate. Depending on specific circumstances, he could inherit at least one-sixth and up to one-third of her assets.

However, some media outlets have claimed that Barbie Hsu and her South Korean husband signed a prenuptial agreement that included a clause renouncing inheritance rights. If this information is accurate, DJ Koo would have no claim to Barbie Hsu’s assets.

On February 10, Mirror Media reported that Barbie Hsu and her second husband had signed a property division agreement before marriage, in which the villa at the National Museum of Fine Arts was designated for her mother, Huang Xuanmai. However, this agreement was not notarized and therefore holds no legal validity.

Meanwhile, Next Apple asserted that no prenuptial agreement existed between Barbie Hsu and DJ Koo. The media outlet 163 also covered the issue, emphasizing that the two stars united for love, without financial motives.

Neither DJ Koo nor Barbie Hsu’s family has commented on these claims. However, DJ Koo’s decision to relinquish his inheritance rights in favor of his mother-in-law suggests that the existence of a prenuptial agreement is irrelevant.

Controversy Over DJ Koo’s Inheritance Rights

After DJ Koo declared that he would forgo his inheritance from Barbie Hsu, many lawyers in Taiwan (China) warned the 1969-born music producer that even if he gave up his entitlement, the assets he was supposed to receive could not be directly transferred to Huang Xuanmai. Instead, they would be evenly distributed between Xu Xiyuan’s two children.

According to lawyer and Taipei politician Ye Qingyuan, since Barbie Hsu’s children are minors, their biological father and legal guardian, Wang Xiaofei, has the right to manage the entire inheritance until they turn 18. If DJ Koo wishes to prevent this, he must first accept his share of the inheritance before transferring it to his mother-in-law. However, this method would subject the South Korean artist to a significant tax burden.

In the event of a legal battle against Wang Xiaofei, DJ Koo holds a significant advantage—the support of Barbie Hsu’s younger sister, Dee Hsu. Setn reported that Dee Hsu’s mother-in-law is a renowned lawyer, while her sister-in-law holds a PhD in law from the U.S. and is a licensed attorney in California. They could provide substantial assistance in a legal dispute over inheritance and child custody.

Unfortunately for DJ Koo, despite being by Barbie Hsu’s side for nearly three years, continuously expressing his love, and even giving up his inheritance rights, he still faces skepticism from Chinese netizens.

Beneath an article titled “Barbie Hsu and DJ Koo Did Not Sign a Prenuptial Agreement, Their Love Was Pure and Unrelated to Money,” a reader commented: “I don’t trust him, the world’s number one opportunist. He manipulated everyone until the very end.”

Following Barbie Hsu’s passing, Chinese social media was rife with speculation that DJ Koo was an intelligent strategist who remained silent and distanced himself from the media to protect himself from controversies while Wang Xiaofei became the focus of criticism, allowing DJ Koo to benefit in the end.

Even when DJ Koo announced his renunciation of inheritance rights, some believed he was aware of Taiwanese (China) law and was merely putting on a show to gain public favor. They speculated that if he eventually received the inheritance, he could later cite high taxes as a reason for not transferring the assets to his mother-in-law.

Supporters countered these conspiracy theories, arguing that DJ Koo’s actions were reasonable. No grieving husband would make a public spectacle if he were truly heartbroken, and Wang Xiaofei’s controversial behavior had nothing to do with DJ Koo. Relinquishing the inheritance to his mother-in-law was an act of goodwill, yet it was still misinterpreted.

Fans also emphasized that DJ Koo was not financially struggling. He had a successful career spanning over 30 years and owned a multi-million-dollar estate in South Korea.
