After famously starring in films that gave Philippine independent cinema global buzz in the last two decades, Coco Martin catapulted to mainstream fame with record-breaking television series and box-office hits
Tatler Asia’s Most Influential honouree Coco Martin has a career spanning two decades, which made him earn the moniker of today’s “Ultimate Superstar”. Aside from headlining critically acclaimed independent films in the past, he has also made the reputation of continuing the legacy of National Artist Fernando Poe Jnr with his recent works such as Ang Probinsyano and Batang Quiapo.
For the past two years of the pandemic, Martin struggled to cement Ang Probinsyano’s success by finishing its seven-year run on television. With this, he is grateful to the Poe family’s support and most especially, to the television viewers and online streamers who tuned into the show.
Under his own film production company, Martin acts as the co-director, co-writer, and co-producer of the series Batang Quiapo, an adaptation of the 1986 film of the same name top-billed by Poe.
What challenges do you see in your respective industry? How do you intend to help address these challenges?
Coco Martin (CM): I am blessed with so much, so I will continue to challenge myself to serve the people of the entertainment industry with meaningful and worthwhile projects and job opportunities. We will continue providing our audience with quality entertainment here in the Philippines and abroad through multiple streaming platforms.
What can you say to those who want to follow in your footsteps?
CM: Always remember that this industry is a team sport. And always have a solid goal that you and your team will achieve. It takes a village. Talent is one thing, but the key ingredients include perseverance, hard work, and humility. Continuously break barriers and comfort zones, always welcome change and overcome difficulties.
Who do you look up to for guidance, inspiration, or mentorship?
CM: Director Brillante Mendoza as my career started in independent films. ABS-CBN, and my bosses Deo Endrinal and Cory Vidanes who have been my support system. And my ever-beautiful manager who moves in mysterious ways, Mother Biboy Arboleda (laughs), for the wisdom and guidance through the years.
What are your plans for the coming years, and what keeps you going?
CM: As long as there are stories waiting to be told, I will continue to tell these stories through television, movies, et cetera.
